Introduction

With the launch of 5G networks and competition from over-the-top (OTT) players, communication service providers (CSPs) are seeking ways to transform their operational and business support systems (OSS/BSS) architectures to stay competitive and monetize future business models.

Siloed, monolithic IT solutions have grown over the last few decades, but they make it difficult to adopt new 5G use cases. It is, therefore, essential to work toward more flexible, composable, and BSS-agnostic IT architectures.

Establishing an effective API program is the key for many telecommunications operators to achieve these goals, yet many API programs are slow to mature and have not yet reached the promised business outcomes. A new approach to providing APIs is required to deliver on this vision.

Challenges

The ODA defines the function blocks for the design of cloud-based OSS/BSS platforms that are mapped to the suite of TMF Open APIs — a set of more than fifty REST APIs to expose capabilities from the OSS/BSS layers. The APIs are fundamental because they provide the standardized interfaces to have a decoupled, modularized, and cloud-native ODA architecture.
