INTRODUCTION: DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION EVOLVES AND ACCELERATES

The past decade has seen many big brands that we all knew and loved get smaller, shut down or get acquired, and new companies have come from seemingly out of nowhere to assume market leadership. Although company leaders have grown accustomed to change, the rate of change has accelerated at a dizzying pace. Digital transformation enables companies to adapt to market changes faster than the competition and capture new opportunities. Therefore, it’s imperative that businesses continually challenge the status quo and embrace digital technologies.

The ZK Research 2021 IT Priorities Survey found that 95% of organizations have at least one digital initiative underway. With today’s focus on the customer experience (CX) and employee experience as well as the crucial role digital technologies play, digital initiatives must be a priority for businesses. In another interesting data point, since the COVID-19 pandemic began, 74% of survey respondents have accelerated their digital transformation plans because of the pandemic.

To become a digital organization, companies have adopted a wide range of new technologies, but none are more important than cloud computing. The cloud enables businesses to build new applications and services quickly and more cost effectively, as there is no hardware to deploy. To date, most cloud initiatives have encompassed leveraging public cloud services, such as those available from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Although these are all excellent solutions that have enabled businesses to transform their companies, they do not meet the needs of all use cases.

In this digital era, the customer experience reigns supreme. In fact, CX is now the top brand differentiator, outweighing all other factors including price and even product quality. One issue with the centralized cloud model is that the time it takes to send data to and from the cloud can lead to a suboptimal experience. Businesses that want to deliver the best possible customer and user experience are now moving data closer to the end user, which is driving the evolution of the cloud to edge computing.
