The skills needed for success in the digital economy were already changing, but the global pandemic has accelerated the pace of technological development even further as it pushed more businesses to move services online very quickly. Closing the Digital Skills Gap A global survey of more than 3,000 executives found the pandemic has sped up the pace that some work skills become obsolete by more than 70%.

Gartner reported that 33% of the skills present in the average job posting in 2017 weren’t required in 2021. This suggests that in just four years, fully onethird of the skills needed for employment have become unimportant to Tech tactics.

“It’s been shown in research that the half-life of highly technical skills can be as little as 2.5 years, which is an incredible statistic,” Holmes said. “In two-and-a-half years, after all some of the technology we are working with will have evolved enough that we would need to refresh our skills and knowledge in that subject area.”

According to ZDNet, cybersecurity is the most in-demand technology skill, sought by 43% of IT leaders up by nearly a quarter in the past 12 months.
