Ransomware is a maliciously created malware that finds and encrypts an organization’s files and storage. Last year alone, the cost of ransomware was $20 billion USD, which is expected to double over this next year. With the average attack now happening every 11 seconds, and the cost of attack exceeding $80 thousand USD, organizations need to ensure their data is fully protected. The threat landscape has increased beyond merely encrypting data to now stealing the data and threatening to publish the data publicly if the ransom is not paid. It’s clear that effective ransomware protection includes a multi-layer defense.

Organizations must plan for prevention and detection of a ransomware threat. Planning and restore speeds are vital for recovering from a ransomware attack. HPE and Veeam can help organizations create a data recovery plan that will ensure data can rapidly and easily recover should a situation arise. Veeam SureBackup® provides immediate notice when a system may not be recoverable due to an undetected ransomware or malware threat, while Veeam Secure Restore enables a complete anti-virus scan of backups when restoring. As a result, 96% of Veeam customers cut their ransomware costs by $5,000 USD on average, and 76% of Veeam customers spend nothing at all.

Data is the heart of everything we do. Together, HPE and Veeam help safeguard data to ensure it’s always on and always protected, and businesses are able to rapidly and easily recover should a situation arise — from human error to malicious attack.

Protect

3-2-1-1-0 backup rule and SureBackup

Good backup hygiene is critical to protecting against all threats. Veeam strongly recommends the 3-2-1-1-0 rule of backup. Three copies of your data (one production and two backup), two different media types, one copy offsite, one copy offline, air-gapped or immutable and 0 errors with SureBackup recovery verification.

Detect

Veeam ONE

Veeam ONE is a powerful monitoring and analytics tool for your IT environment. By leveraging realtime monitoring, Veeam ONE can see when a virtual machine, or host, is displaying behavior consistent with files being encrypted by ransomware. If this occurs, Veeam ONE will raise the alert and take action.

Recover

HPE Storage Snapshots

HPE storage snapshots are readonly and cannot be encrypted by ransomware. As a result, using HPE storage snapshots on HPE Nimble and HPE Primera storage provides an additional layer of protection against malicious threats.
